Calls for Measures to Reduce Fatalities on the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway

The Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway, the busiest highway in Cambodia, has been the scene of tragic accidents for years, resulting in numerous fatalities. In the wake of the latest fatal crash, local authorities are calling for measures to reduce the number of casualties on the expressway.

The 132-kilometer expressway is the main route connecting the two cities, and is used by thousands of vehicles each day. Despite its immense popularity, it has seen its fair share of tragic accidents over the years. In April this year, a truck carrying fuel overturned on the expressway, killing three people and injuring seven others.

The accident was the latest in a series of fatal crashes on the expressway. In 2017, a bus and truck collided, killing 10 people and injuring 20 others. The following year, a van carrying 10 people crashed into a truck, leaving three people dead and four others injured.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has responded to the increasing number of fatalities by calling for measures to reduce casualties on the expressway. In particular, authorities are calling for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

The government has also proposed the introduction of a speed-limit system on the expressway. The system would limit the speed of vehicles to a maximum of 80 kilometers per hour, with violators subject to fines. Additionally, the government has proposed the installation of cameras to monitor traffic and the deployment of additional traffic police personnel to ensure compliance with the speed limit.

Furthermore, the government is proposing the construction of two additional lanes on the expressway, as well as the introduction of more traffic signs to remind drivers to keep to the speed limit. The government is also planning to introduce a system of roadside assistance for stranded vehicles, in order to reduce the number of vehicles on the side of the road.

In addition to these measures, the government is also calling for increased public awareness of road safety. This includes campaigns to educate drivers on the importance of following traffic laws and the dangers of speeding. The government is also urging drivers to be more vigilant and to practice defensive driving.
